67 beetle won't go into first gear
Jacked up the car last night. Put the Jack under the engine on a lump of wood. Mistake me thinks as today, it won't go into first gear but goes staright into third. If you are lucky, you can get it into first, but only if you put it into second and then into first. Does anyone think I have done something nasty to the mechanism at the gear stick end or possibly the gearbox end. An ideas gratefull recieved.Cheers. Nully |

sounds like a problem with the gear selector rod..maybe bent slightly? only way to find out is to venture underneath with a torch and a bit of bar (jack handle?) to try and straighten. go easy though! you could quite easily make it worse!

If the engine is securely fastened to the gearbox then jacking it up won't have done any damage, I've done it lots and lots of times...
Venturing underneath won't give ye any access to the gear rod tho', it's inside the central tunnel! Ye need to make sure the gear shifter is secure and adjusted properly... And check under the panel 'neath the rear seat and make sure the gear coupling is intact and not 'sloppy'. Oh, and check yer engine's actually fastened on ![]()
