Here is a pic of my latest ebay bargain a set of 4 Rivieras
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll120/Jessop78/VW/Riviera1.jpg
Not sure whether to re-detail or strip and go for the fully polished look, I'm edging towards the polished look.
Just got to convince my wife that a set of drop spindles would be a good idea ;)

Really great to see such an original bug! Looks great as it is, but in my opinion, polishing those rivieras will look fantastic against the green and apart from the dropped spindles I wouldnt do anything else to it! Really nice!:)

Cheers, I have to say the photos make it lok a bit better than it is but then it has got that lovely patina of use, you can see on the first photo where the PO had polished through the paint on the bonnet it is also like this on the roof and engine lid in places.

:D Yep! Lots of 800 and 1200 grit wet and dry and tubes of autosol! Fingers ached for a week! Good luck! Cant wait to see them done and on your car! Its going to look brilliant! Always best not to rush things! Thats what I kept telling the missus about my beetle when she kept asking when it was going to be finished!:p

Nice looking wheels Nick. Keep up the good work

NickJ

Thanks Scott, I hope the work pays off when they are fitted, I'd been looking for a set of Rivieras for a while as you don't see them as much now. When I had my first Bug in the '80s they were quite popular along with Empi 5s & 8s but now Fuchs seem to be the most popular wheel.

Very nice dude and quite similar to mine, the paint on the gutters, roof and number plate light pod on mine have worn through... I bet mines been welded much more though lol
And yours is the first time I've seen the brown trim option too.

NickJ
26-11-2008, 09:24 PM
Yes, I haven't seen the brown trim before, mine has had some serious welding underneath as the PO looked after it but didn't clean it properly underneath so when I got it home, jacked up and started poking around, the area under the rear seat needed a lot of work and I had to replace the front beam as that had rotted through
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll120/Jessop78/VW/rustybeamsupport.jpg
But good old ebay came to the rescue and I bought a complete front beam and just changed the bits I needed and kept what I could.

Rossy

Ah I guess I've got you beat there, the pan on mine has only ever been welded once in the form of one tiny patch in the battery tray about 4''by1'' big. The body on the other hand has seen the torch everywhere, I think all four corners have been repaired at least twice plus a bumper mount plus most of the front end sheet metal.....

The dash looks nicey unmolested though don't ya think?:p

Nice looking 69 you have there! I noticed the brown trim, are the door arm rests black? I'm thinking of having a tan interior in my 69 (when it gets to that stage) but have never heard of arm rests in any other colour than black or white (late model anyway) and I'm not sure black would look right with tan!

Rivs are looking nice, hurry up and polish them, I need to see pics :D

Hey how about this guys? Somes friend of mine have just yesterday bought a ratty 69 1300 in what looks to be Diamond Blue (though it could be grey its that faded) and it features its original special order BLUE basketweave interior:thumbs:

Cheers, it seems to be an unusual colour combination and yes the arm rests are black.
I'm quite (very) slow getting the wheels finished, I'm trying to get my '72 Bay sorted as well  that's my excuse anyway.
I've got to a sort of semi polished stage with Rivieras now,

Just got to keep working on them but it doesn't half make your fingers sore

That's what I figured, I think I'm going with good old fashioned black now :D

Is that the whole interior or just the arm rests?
with a dark interior you just have to watch out for the occasional sunny day or don't wear shorts and vest :D that vinyl can really burn

It'll be the whole interior, it was black originally anyway.

I always try not to wear shorts or a vest, I call it social responsibility :D

I went with 165's on the front and 185's on the back, the plan was for dropped spindles but I'm starting to like the whole 70's in the air look but not really sure which way to go any ideas ??

I thought it was time for a bit of an update as I've recently fitted some new dampers to the rear.
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll120/Jessop78/VW/Beetle/LiftingtheCar.jpg
First job was to lift the car.
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll120/Jessop78/VW/Beetle/Shockoutofthebox.jpg
I decided to fit gas charged dampers from GSF and this is it straight out of the box, the damper needs to be pushed / pulled through its full range a couple of times before fitting.
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll120/Jessop78/VW/Beetle/UndoingthenutBolt.jpg
I'd given all the nuts a good soak in WD40 a couple of days before so I didn't have any problems undoing anything which makes a nice change.
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll120/Jessop78/VW/Beetle/Newshockfitted.jpg
Here's the first fitted.
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll120/Jessop78/VW/Beetle/Rustyshock.jpg
You can see from this picture that the old dampers had really had it.
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll120/Jessop78/VW/Beetle/RearWheel.jpg
Wheel back on and ready to go, I'd put aside a morning to do this job but surprisingly after just over an hour I was tidying up :D

Cheers Fellas, this is what the wheels looked like when i got them
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll120/Jessop78/VW/Riviera2.jpg
I'm quite pleased how they turned out, I've always liked the Riviera wheel, you don't see them very often and these were that rare thing a real ebay bargain.:D
