Hi all,

It's a long story for another post but in short I have inherited a '72 Bay Camper from my sister's ex-fiancee who has emigrated to Australia. Before he went down under, he took it on holiday it to my parents' near Bordeaux but lost every gear but 2nd on the way and had to be towed in by my Dad, he then removed the engine and gearbox... 4 years later and as he aint coming back he has very kindly agreed to let me have it if I can get it back to the UK (Mum and Dad being a little annoyed by the tarpaulin covered van outside their kitchen window!). I took a new cog-box out a year or so ago but having a mate round the corner form me, who is an ex-VW delaer mechanic and ex-Bay owner, I realy want to recover it to the UK to work on...

How best to do this?

I have contacted various UK to France removals firms to see if one of their trucks could bring it back after a relocation but none of them have come back to me...

As a new father I really want to get cracking on this as I'd love my son to grow up having holidays in it but as a new father, my budget for the recovery ad subsequent restoration work (just after my sister and her ex- bought it, it caught fire on the drive back round the M25 and the interior was gutted) is pretty small...

All advice on anything to do with this recovery and restoration would be jolly well welcome!

Many thanks,

Matt the newbie

P.S HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL!

Quite a tall order there Matt. Do you have tow bar and large trailer. Whenever I have moved motors I have hired a large trailer and moved it with a mate. You have the added problem though with it being over the water so a relay between mates/club members is a bit more tricky. Wish you all the best Happy New year and welcome.

What ever way you look at it, it will be cheaper, safer and stress free for you to trailer it home yourself and it's probably the best way of doing it to. So why not combine a short holiday down to Bordeaux to see the folks with suitable towing equipment, make them happy by seeing the new chap and the removal of the bus? And if you feel really crazy why not spend a night in the bus while down there. I did that while mine was in the workshop. Loved every moment of it.
